Supplementary Feeding in Southern Queensland and New England
Supplementary feeding may be used with different goals in mind:
- to promote intake of mature pastures with low digestibility
- to maintain energy intake when feed supply becomes limited
- to promote pasture regrowth and protect perennial species from overgrazing
- to compensate key classes of cattle when the risk of deficiencies is highest (see Problem Solving)
When forage is available, but intake is limited by its maturity and indigestibility, maintaining protein levels and preserving microbial activity within the rumen is essential. Under these circumstances, great benefit can be gained from a supplement that includes urea and sulphur.
Insufficient pasture availability can be overcome by feeding a balanced energy and protein source such as grain or balanced molasses with unlimited access to hay.

When selecting a suitable supplement to maintain their stock, graziers should consider:
- class of cattle - breeders will require a higher level plane of nutrition during the late pregnancy and lactation/breeding
- whether in addition to supplementing nitrogen, a supplementary energy source (grain) is needed
- any mineral deficiencies known to affect cattle production
- salt-seeking behaviour of the cattle
- access to equipment and labour options - when and how you can feed.
